Auschwitz-Birkenau: how the visit works.
The Memorial sits 70km west of Krakow at Oswiecim. Entry is free, but from spring to autumn you can only go in on a booked slot, and almost every tour sold from Krakow bundles the transfer, the guide and the headset into one ticket. The differences that matter are pickup point, group size, and whether Birkenau is included or left as a shuttle you make yourself.

Krakow is where most Poland trips start.
A market square you can cross in four minutes, a castle on the hill above the river, Kazimierz two tram stops south, and the two heaviest day trips in the country an hour outside town. Three days is the honest minimum.
Wieliczka: 800 years of digging, three hours of stairs.
The tourist route drops 135 metres past brine lakes and timbered chambers to St Kinga’s Chapel, where the chandeliers, the altar and the floor tiles are all cut from rock salt. Warsaw rebuilt itself brick by brick, and says so.
The Old Town you walk through was reconstructed from paintings after 1945, and the city keeps two more stories running underneath it: the Rising, and forty years of concrete that followed. Add a Chopin recital, because this is where he learned to play.

Gdansk, and the coast that made it rich.
Amber, grain and the Hanseatic League built the tall houses along the Motlawa. The shipyard where the strikes started is a twenty-minute walk north, Malbork — the largest brick castle anywhere — is under an hour by train, and Sopot’s pier is on the same commuter line.

Old towns and river cruises exist all over Europe. A cathedral cut into a salt seam, a Soviet steel town toured in a Trabant, and highland thermal water under the Tatras do not.
The Chapel in the Salt
Miners started carving Wieliczka in the 13th century and never really stopped. St Kinga’s Chapel is 101 metres below the fields: the altar, the reliefs on the walls and the chandeliers hanging over them are all rock salt, cut by men who worked the shift and then carved on their own time. The route is 800 stairs down and a lift back up, and the air is cold enough for a jacket in August.

Nowa Huta, by Trabant
Stalin’s planners dropped an entire steel town on farmland east of Krakow in 1949, laid out around one central square with avenues radiating off it, complete with nuclear shelters under the housing blocks. Guides run it in period Trabants and Fiat 126s, stop at a milk bar for lunch, and can point out which balcony the 1960s protests were watched from.

Highland Thermal Water
Geothermal water sits under the whole Podhale basin, and the villages around Zakopane pipe it into outdoor pools that stay at 36°C while snow falls on the rails.
